Description

Summary

Responsible for generating 3D CAD models and producing 2D and 3D civil and structural drawings within a multi-disciplined BIM environment primarily used for the construction of buildings and complex infrastructure sites.

Key objectives

  • Responsible for producing 3D civil and structural models (BIM), 2D drawings and details as part of a multi-disciplined team under the supervision of a Senior Technician
  • Be able to use various 2D and 3D CAD packages
  • Work alongside Engineers and Technicians within the civil structural department
  • Work alongside Architects and Building Services Engineers as part of a multi-disciplined team
  • Able to work within a team, with good interpersonal skills
  • Be willing to learn new skills within the construction industry.

 

Principal responsibilities and accountabilities

  • To produce civil and structural drawings from both 2D and 3D models
  • Work closely with other members of the design team to help deliver high quality drawings and details
  • Learn about design co-ordination, and how it relates to the civil and structural drawings
  • Carry out site visits and site surveys occasionally
  • Possess good communication skills and positive attitude
  • Develop a responsibility for your own work and be able to check your own work before passing onto your line manager
  • Register and document control of incoming information and outgoing deliverables
  • Help with office and project filing and maintaining drawing records, such as check and record file copies
  • Develop positive relationships with colleagues through good professional conduct
  • Attend in-house CAD courses and seminars
  • Attend part time HNC in Civil Engineering course – 1 day per week for 2 to 3 years
  • Be a positive member of the team, be accountable for your work and help to hit project deadlines.

 

Qualifications and training

  • High School education – 5 good grades at GCSE/Standard Grade/National 5 level (C or above E&W, 3 or above Scot) including Maths, English and a science subject.  Graphic Communications would be an advantage.
  • B-Tec/ NVQ/ equivalent A-Levels(minimum of 2 at Grade C or above)/Highers (minimum of 3 at Grade C or above) to enter direct to HNC/ HND Day release
  • Be supported on a company training scheme and continued support throughout your career. Be sponsored on an HNC in Civil Engineering day release course.
  • Become professionally qualified with the ICE Eng Tech qualification within 3 or 4 years ideally.

 

Technical

  • A working knowledge of AutoCAD 2D and 3D or similar packages would be an advantage but not essential
  • To be willing and able to develop knowledge and experience of traditional building materials, e.g. Steel, Timber, Concrete and RC detailing, and overall site wide infrastructure and earthworks
  • An ability to understand drawing mark-ups, and able to develop a good eye for the detail of specific tasks
  • To be willing and able to develop an outline appreciation of CDM regulations
  • Be willing and able to learn and develop knowledge of current UK technical standards/publications and legislation requirements
  • Be willing and able to learn and develop knowledge of standard details and solutions, and compliance.
  • To have good IT skills.
