Summary

Responsible for generating structural designs of civil and structural engineering members as part of a multi-disciplinary design team.

Key objectives

  • Provide appropriate levels of civil and structural design to a range of different buildings and elements.
  • To be responsible for your own ICE training and effectively manage route to chartered review process.

Principal responsibilities and accountabilities

 

  • Be responsible for the production of detailed civil and structural calculations in accordance with the relevant standards and procedures
  • Be fully conversant with the basics of British Standards and Eurocodes with respect to civils and structural loading, design and specification.
  • Ensure quality of delivery when producing sketches or CAD drawings to internal and/or customer standards.
  • Work closely with other members of the design team to deliver safe, efficient and buildable solutions.
  • Communicate and collaborate with engineers and technicians from other disciplines, other consultants, etc.
  • Promote and achieve excellent service through Perfect Delivery
  • Ensure thorough checking and accuracy of own deliverables and record documentation in accordance with company QA procedures
  • Take active responsibility for maintaining calculation and drawing records.
  • Develop positive relationships with customers through good professional conduct
  • Participate in knowledge sharing across team and locations
  • Attend in-house design courses and seminars and feedback to the rest of the department if required.
  • Keep up to date with ICE CPD requirements
  • Report to management team as required
  • Excellent team ethic, and ability to work extended hours on occasions when required
  • Represent MSPS in external project technical meetings if required
  • Review specialist subcontractors/suppliers production calculations and drawings for technical compliance with design intent

Qualifications and training

  • Masters degree in civil or structural engineering
  • Ideally aiming for MICE in the future
  • Eligible to pass criteria for security clearance and airside pass applications

Technical skills and experience

Technical:

  • High level proficiency of industry standard 2D/3D structural design software such as Masterseries, Tedds and Staad for example.
  • “Engineer” proficiency in the use of AutoCAD 2D and 3D software.
  • “Engineer” working knowledge of Autodesk REVIT.
  • A good knowledge in the production of technical specifications and the ability to use NBS Building and Create.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of traditional building materials, e.g. Steel, Timber, Concrete and RC and overall site wide infrastructure and earthworks.
  • A keen eye for the detail of specific tasks, combined with an understanding of how such specifics fit in with the project as a whole
  • Knowledge of CDM regulations
  • Knowledge of current UK technical standards/publications and legislation requirements
  • High level of proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software i.e. word, excel, etc.

 

Team management:

  • Ability to work accurately and methodically under pressure and strict deadlines, including the ability to juggle multiple tasks
  • Excellent time and cost management skills to ensure cost effective and accurate delivery
  • Effectively manage own time and others within small teams across multiple projects and prioritise workload
  • Strong demonstrable communication style and interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to influence and negotiate both internally and externally
  • Ability to work well within a team of other professionals (Architects, service engineers etc) in delivering designs to satisfy the agreed brief
