Opportunity: 

We have a fantastic opportunity within our Infrastructure business for an ambitious and talented Senior Materials Engineer to work within our Highways contracts.   

We are looking for a Senior Materials to provide technical support and expertise to work winning teams and project management, to develop and oversee the materials strategies both in terms of compliance and commercial value on Highways projects. The Senior Materials Engineer will also be required to provide support to the Engineering Manager – Materials and work winning teams. 

The person: 

Detailed knowledge and experience of the following: Earthworks strategies, Concrete Technology, Asphalt Technology, SHW and its supporting documents, WRAP Protocol, Cl:aire Protocol, Waste classification WM3.

Experience on a wide range of high value contracts including experience in: Highways and rail projects including aspects of; Site Investigation, Earthworks, drainage, structural concrete and surfacing and the standards relating to these areas, Processing, recycling and waste reduction, UKAS materials testing, compliance and budget control, Pre-contract experience: Developing earthworks strategies, Supplier selection, Sub-contract and supplier quotation review and recommendations. 

Initially based in our Salford Quays office, the successful applicant will add to the current materials team initially assisting with work winning on Highways bids. The new addition will add flexibility and strengthen the team and move onto site on to either the M5, M27 and then the A421 contracts later in the year.

Responsibilities:

As a Senior Engineer you will:

  • Implement materials strategies developed at pre-contract stage.
  • Identify scope for betterment to the client’s specifications.
  • Earthworks classification and optimise re-use of site generated materials to reduce the volume of materials disposed to landfill.
  • Support a sustainable materials strategy to maximise recycled materials and reduce the requirements for primary aggregates where possible.
  • Compilation of materials management plans.
  • Management of onsite UKAS accredited Laboratory.
  • When required procure, review and oversee management of sub-contract test house within budget and to ensure reports received are accurate to allow successful handover of the project.

About the Highways Team:

Our projects encompass motorway widening, congestion relief, safety improvement and bypass schemes. Recent work includes M62 Smart Motorways, Lincolnshire’s new A1073 bypass, the A1 Improvement scheme from Dishforth to Barton in North Yorkshire, and the M74 Completion Project through central Glasgow, Scotland’s largest infrastructure scheme. Under Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) schemes, we engage with our customers as early as possible to maximise innovation, efficiency and cost savings.
