Opportunity: 

We have a fantastic opportunity within our Infrastructure business for an ambitious and talented Materials Engineer. 

We are looking for a Materials Engineer who can provide technical support and expertise to project management and to develop and oversee the materials strategies both in terms of compliance and commercial value.

The Materials Engineer will also be required to provide support to the Engineering Manager – Materials and working winning teams for the M27. 

Already experienced as a Materials Engineer, you will have detailed knowledge of SHW and its supporting documents, WRAP Protocol, Cl:aire Protocol and.Waste classification WM3. Experience on a wide range of high value contracts including experience in Highways and rail projects including aspects of Site Investigation is required.

Responsibilities: 

As a Materials Engineer you will:

  • Implement materials strategies developed at pre-contract stage.
  • Identify scope for betterment to the client’s specifications.
  • Earthworks classification and optimise re-use of site generated materials to reduce the volume of materials disposed to landfill.
  • Support a sustainable materials strategy to maximise recycled materials and reduce the requirements for primary aggregates were possible.
  • Compilation of materials management plans.
  • Procure, review and oversee management of sub-contract test house within budget and to ensure reports received are accurate to allow successful handover of the project.
  • Ensure that all testing on the project is performed competently and in a safe manner as to not place the technicians at risk of harm.
  • Review and advise on the suitability of Inspection and Test Plan’s to ensure sampling and testing requirements are achieved.
  • Review project specific specifications and appendices, providing advice on suitability and practicalities.
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications of all imported and site generated bulk fill materials in terms of engineering and environmental requirements.
  • Review and develop cost effective and sustainable mix designs with the supply chain. When site batching, develop mix designs through trial mixes overseeing plant trials and review test data to ensure compliance and rheology of the mix are appropriate.
  • Work closely with designers to ensure pavement designs meet specification requirements and propose alternative sustainable alternatives.
  • Be aware of current markets prices, standards and specifications and potential supply and demand issues.
  • Provide mentoring and training on materials and testing to Morgan Sindall staff.
  • Provide support to the Engineering Manager and work winning teams as required.

Already experienced as a Materials Engineer you will be ideally Degree or HNC level qualification in Civil Engineering or materials related subject. Membership of a professional body. Current CSCS Card.

About the Highways Team:

Our projects encompass motorway widening, congestion relief, safety improvement and bypass schemes. Recent work includes M62 Smart Motorways, Lincolnshire’s new A1073 bypass, the A1 Improvement scheme from Dishforth to Barton in North Yorkshire, and the M74 Completion Project through central Glasgow, Scotland’s largest infrastructure scheme.
