We're seeking a self-motivated, seasoned professional to join our Highways team as a Principal / Associate Engineer. If you're passionate about contributing to the ever-evolving highways sector, this is your chance to make your mark in a growing team.

This exciting role offers the chance to blend technical expertise with skills in leadership. Ideally, you'll be a chartered engineer with a track record in delivering highway projects, capable of managing mid-sized projects and/or design packages for large-scale initiatives.

You’ll be expected to lead multi-disciplinary teams of engineers, technicians and external suppliers, delivering superior project outcomes. You'll also be the face of the business to our clients, ensuring their needs are met and nurturing these crucial relationships for BakerHicks' sustained success.

Working closely with our sector director and senior management, the role will support the expansion of our project portfolio and client base, managing initial client enquiries through to the tender and delivery stages, with project management responsibilities as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Managing a diverse portfolio of projects delivered by our multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Managing project budgets and resources to deliver high quality outcomes on schedule.
  • Supporting the sector director in business development strategies, business expansion initiatives, and realising our business plan.
  • Coordinating project deliverables, site surveys, construction stage duties, client liaison, and tracking progress against the project brief.
  • Ensuring clarity in resource allocation and project requirements across design disciplines.
  • Monitoring project fee expenditure and commercial objectives, maintaining communication with design teams to keep project delivery on track.
  • Ensuring team adherence to company quality standards and best practices.
  • Preparing competitive tenders, reviewing bids, estimating fees, defining scopes of work and managing changes.

Requirements

Essential

  • Chartered status with a professional institution.
  • Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in highways design and familiarity with design standards and specifications.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proven team management experience.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience in leading or contributing to bids and proposals.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Willingness to travel to client sites or other offices as required.

Desirable

  • Experience leading design in a design-and-build environment on road projects.
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary projects and teams on large highway projects.
  • Experience with NEC contract administration, including managing contract notifications and change control.
  • Experience working with Smart Streets and Intelligent Transport Systems.
  • Full clean UK driving license.
