Position Summary
To make sure that work is carried out to the customer’s standards, specification and schedule and that the correct materials and workmanship are used; ensuring the customer is given quality work and value for money. Deploying quality assurance and control activities to support right first-time delivery for their area. Deploying quality improvement plans in accordance with relevant objectives. Using, capturing and sharing learning from experience to support improvement in quality performance.
The Quality Engineer will report directly to the Senior Quality Engineer and support a number of scope packages within the Civil, Structural & Architectural (CS&A) and Site Establishment works.
Key Responsibilites
- Develop, maintain, improve – and provide coaching on the use of – local management systems to enable effective delivery.
- Verifying that quality requirements and processes are adequately specified and complied with.
- Ensure that the works (including materials and workmanship) are adequately specified and are carried out in accordance with contract documents/programmes and assist in the resolution of any on-site issues that may arise.
- Ensure that lifetime records are produced concurrently and demonstrate compliance with specified requirements for all works activities, in accordance with specifications and the Life Time Record Strategy.
- Interface and engage with key stakeholders to promote a joined-up approach to quality.
- Support in the assessment of the ability of suppliers to meet specified requirements and to raise any concerns or issues with the Senior Quality Engineer
- Engage with relevant disciplines/functions to translate requirements and expectations, taking consideration of risks and opportunities and learning from experience (LFE) to help push for continual improvement; Contribute to project meetings, subcontractor pre-contract and pre-start/opening up and Quality Kick Off meetings.
- Work collaboratively with integrated teams to prepare and implement quality plans and inspection & test plans, including co-ordination of surveillances required to monitor quality standards in line with specifications.
- Review relevant documentation including supply chain quality submissions.
- Ensure that quality and lifetime record strategies for a project, operation, activity or contract are complied with, ensuring a demonstrable audit trail that the product/service meets the required specifications.
- Promote the Quality Policy and support the development of a healthy quality culture. This includes Right First Time delivery and ownership of quality in the line, so that quality is understood to be a critical enabler to Nuclear Safety and good overall operational delivery.
- Assist in the delivery of the appropriate Nuclear Safety Training Education Package where required.
- Carry out defined QA/QC activities (including measuring, monitoring, verification, validation and certification) to deliver the expected results.
- Provide coaching on quality tools and practices to guide others on how to achieve the best outcome and achieve right first time.
- Analyse QA/QC outputs (e.g. using appropriate statistical techniques and root cause analysis) to determine products or services conform to requirements; engage with integrated teams to determine potential solutions.
- Communicate quality performance to the Senior Quality Engineer to enable effective decisions and appropriate mitigating actions.
- Provide oversight and assurance of the quality management system, including advice to users on quality matters.
- Ensure that current knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and methods of installation is up-to-date using all appropriate means including reading, research from the industry lead bodies, and networking with all appropriate organisations, and engineers.
- Assist in the undertaking of inspections, audits/assurance reviews and investigations where required, reporting and implementing lessons learned and improvements.
- Use and assist in the development and implementation of appropriate tools and techniques (including key performance indicators/ dashboards) to monitor quality performance and measure processes effectiveness.
- Identify, capture and share LFE and best practice to promote continual improvement of Quality Performance.
- Raises any quality deviation or non-conformance as an event to trigger investigation and learning, and ensure the timely close out of these.
- Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job and participate in appropriate training activities
The Person
- Trained Internal Auditor or working towards Lead Auditor to ISO 9001 (desirable).
- Practitioner Member of the CQI or working towards Practitioner level as a minimum.
- Good team working skills, with at least 2 years’ experience of working within a similar Quality Engineering role, with the ability to motivate self and colleagues to achieve high standards of compliance.
- Operational or Project experience within the Nuclear Industry or in an environment with similar complexity, risk and regulations, sufficient to understand and review end to end processes and propose quality improvements.
- Knowledge & background in a Civils, Structural and Architectural (CS&A) environment (desirable).
- Previous experience with temporary works (desirable).
- Ability to ensure standards and specifications are met.
- Have a wide understanding of the industry, including knowledge of materials, trades, methods and legal requirements
- Able to engage effectively with all levels of the PPP organisation, suppliers and Stakeholders, to provide coaching, education and challenge and to support the effective interface between all parties. Relevant security clearance level to access and inspect areas of site within area of responsibility (if applicable).
- Able to work collaboratively with integrated teams to assist in the development of quality plans and inspection plans and define requirements for life time records.
- Able to use and develop appropriate tools and techniques (including audits, key performance indicators/ dashboards to support trending) to monitor quality performance and measure processes effectiveness.
- Able to maintain and improve management system arrangements and promote procedural adherence to support right first time quality delivery
- Good working knowledge of industry techniques
- Good planning and time management skills; able to manage activities simultaneously without compromising on standards and quality
- Flexible with location – willing to work both on and off site, as the project evolves. (Role primarily based in Cumbria with occasional travel to Risley)
