What is the role
As the Lead Process Safety Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring stringent safety and security standards are met throughout all stages of our projects. This senior leadership position demands an expert in process and functional safety, including human factors and safety integration. While nuclear expertise is advantageous, it is not essential. Your leadership will drive the integration of safety practices within the V-Model framework, ALARP justification, and COMAH compliance, ensuring the safe and secure execution of our projects.
What will you do
- Utilise your extensive expertise in safety case development, process safety, and functional
safety, with a particular emphasis on industry-specific challenges.
- Lead Hazard Identification reviews, Process Safety reviews, and Functional Safety
assessments, ensuring adherence to rigorous safety protocols aligned with industry
standards.
- Oversee the seamless integration of engineering deliverables within the V-Model
framework, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements.
- Provide leadership in ALARP justification, and COMAH compliance for chemicals, ensuring all
risks are appropriately mitigated.
- Develop and maintain emergency preparedness and response plans to address potential
accidents, incidents, or security threats, coordinating with regulatory authorities and
emergency responders.
- Foster a strong safety culture throughout the organisation, promoting accountability,
continuous improvement, and open communication regarding safety issues.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, standards, and licensing requirements set
forth by regulatory authorities, industry organisations, and government agencies.
- Manage the safety and security of the supply chain, evaluating suppliers, establishing quality
assurance requirements, and monitoring compliance throughout the procurement process.
- Minimise the environmental impact of facilities and operations through effective waste
management, pollution prevention, and environmental monitoring programs.
- Consider safety, security, and environmental factors throughout the entire life cycle of
projects, from conceptual design and construction to decommissioning and waste disposal,
ensuring long-term stewardship and safe transitions at each stage.
What you need
- Proven track record in safety engineering within high-risk industries, with a thorough
understanding of safety requirements across the plant life cycle.
- Expertise in ALARP principles, HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL, and QRA methodologies.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to simplify complex ideas for
diverse stakeholders.
- Extensive experience in design, technical detailing, and specification writing, supported by
proficiency in standard software packages.
Desirable:
- Membership of a recognised Engineering Institute (e.g., TUV, IChemE, Energy Institute
- Chartered Engineer Status
- Prior experience in safety engineering.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary design teams.
- Proven capability in managing teams across various levels of expertise.
- Experience in bid management, proposal development, and tender specifications.
- Expertise in hazard identification and reviews, hazardous area classification, and pressure
relief system design.
- Current security clearance, or willingness to obtain upon successful appointment.
- Proficiency in specialised software relevant to safety engineering.
