Job Advert: Section Engineer
Role Summary: As a Section Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing above and below ground level construction activities, ensuring adherence to customer specifications and project dimensions. Your primary objectives will include understanding and interpreting drawings and specifications, providing engineering expertise and support to the project team, producing risk assessments and method statements, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, and effectively organising and supervising resources to meet project deadlines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead by example, promoting a strong culture of safety and environmental compliance.
- Monitor work under your control, promptly addressing any unsafe conditions or non-compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Foster positive working relationships with customers, the design team, and supply chain partners.
- Advise engineers on setting out methods and techniques.
- Ensure accuracy and adequacy of construction-related information in drawings and specification documents, promptly requesting any missing information.
- Set out works accurately and clearly before scheduled commencement, allowing for independent checks when necessary.
- Communicate effectively with foremen and gangers to ensure clear understanding of provided information.
- Maintain comprehensive records of verbal instructions from customers and/or design team staff, as well as resources employed for additional works.
- Arrange formal checking of setting out and ensure completion of check request forms.
- Ensure engineers maintain proper survey books and daily diaries.
- Complete inspection and test plans as required, including dimension accuracy and quality checks.
- Collaborate with section foremen to develop four-weekly programmes, ensuring necessary resources are available.
- Monitor progress and mark up the programme for review at the weekly site review meeting.
- Prepare written risk assessments and method statements for work control.
- Maintain a detailed daily site diary, including changes/variations, subcontractor attendance, and work-related discussions.
- Assist in material take-off and requisitions as requested.
- Ensure cost coding of delivery tickets and submit them to the accounts department and/or commercial team.
- Oversee testing/sampling of materials as specified.
- Place and confirm orders for materials, maintaining an orderly register of all orders.
- Perform other relevant duties as required.
Person Specification:
- Relevant industry qualification (HND/HNC/BEng or equivalent).
- Valid CSCS Card.
- Good knowledge of specifications and testing regimes relevant to general civil engineering.
- Hands-on approach to commercial and planning aspects of projects.
- Previous experience in civil engineering and construction.
- Proficiency in producing and explaining accurate plans and drawings.
- Strong IT skills, including proficiency with MS Office and other system applications.
- Ability to challenge designs and resolve problems effectively.
- Excellent project management, communication, and financial management skills.
- Sound understanding of construction methods, health and safety regulations, and legal requirements.
- Exceptional communication, people management, and team collaboration skills.
- Excellent organisational, planning, and time management abilities, with the capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously without compromising quality.
- Adept at developing friendly and professional customer-focused relationships.
- Strong management skills, capable of motivating employees to achieve compliance standards.
- Self-driven, results-oriented, with a positive outlook.
