Carbon Manager

A strategic role with direct IMT influence and responsibility for shaping organisational carbon performance.

Role Purpose

The Carbon Manager (Upper Management level) will provide strategic leadership for carbon management across MSI, acting as the senior point of expertise on carbon. This role is expected to influence and challenge at board level, driving transformational change in carbon data, reporting, and performance, and also drive and challenge site wide reporting.  The postholder will oversee the development of data systems, standards alignment, and cultural change to enable achievement of the organisation’s Net Zero 2030 ambitions.

Reporting to the Engineering Director, with close collaboration with the Engineering & Environmental teams.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Carbon Leadership

  • Shape and steer the business unit’s carbon strategy in alignment with corporate Net Zero commitments.
  • Oversee carbon measurement and verification processes across all bids and projects.
  • Champion low-carbon design and decision-making, ensuring it is embedded into business unit strategy, bids, and operations.
  • Advise board members and executive leadership, providing high-quality insight, risk analysis, and performance reporting.
  • Reporting of Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions to the IMT & MSG as and when required.

Carbon Data & Systems Transformation

  • Lead the creation of a business-wide carbon data architecture, ensuring accuracy, automation and consistency.
  • Select, implement, and integrate digital tools that support automated data capture, dashboards, and forecasting.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant sustainability and prepare the organisation for future regulatory requirements.
  • Create a governance framework for carbon reporting that can stand up to external audit.

Bid & Work Winning Influence

  • Ensure all major bids reflect best-in-class environmental and low-carbon solutions.
  • Engage directly in high-value work winning activities, shaping the environmental narrative and solution development.
  • Build relationships with clients to position the organisation as a leader in low-carbon delivery.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Mentor and guide junior environmental professionals and bid managers.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, encouraging new approaches to carbon reduction and environmental management.
  • Act as the senior representative in discussions with clients, regulators, and industry bodies.

Skills & Experience

  • Significant experience in ESG, sustainability strategy, or carbon management within a corporate or complex organisation.
  • Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence at IMT level.
  • Advanced capability in data management, digital tools, automation, and analytics.
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation, ISO14001 and carbon accounting standards (or ability to learn rapidly).
  • Experience in infrastructure, energy, utilities, or major project environments is highly desirable.
  • Degree or formal qualifications helpful but not essential; proven expertise is more important.
