Talented people are the key to our success.

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Environmental Manager to join our team on the MetroWest project, supporting the successful delivery of a range of exciting rail infrastructure schemes. This Network Rail project will significantly enhance regional connectivity by converting a freight line to passenger use between Bristol and Pill and reinstating a disused line between Pill and Portishead.

As an Environmental Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring the project’s environmental commitments are met while contributing to a major infrastructure development that will deliver long‑term benefits to the regional rail network.

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead environmental delivery and ensure full compliance across the project.
  • Identify, assess, and manage environmental risks throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Function as the key environmental interface between the Client and sub‑contractors.
  • Ensure delivery of environmental requirements in the Development Consent Order, Environmental Management Plans and Morgan Sindall standards.
  • Prepare and maintain key environmental documentation, including Environmental Management Plans and supporting documents.
  • Attend site visits and meetings, clearly communicating environmental requirements to project and site teams.
  • Manage environmental sub‑contractors across noise, ecology, arboriculture, and archaeology.
  • Support engineers with the implementation and monitoring of carbon‑reduction measures.
  • Provide initiative-taking environmental advice, guidance, and technical support to the wider project team.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience working as an Environmental Manager within an infrastructure environment.
  • Experience in the rail sector or within a Principal Contractor (PC) environment (desirable).
  • Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
  • Strong experience in identifying, assessing, and managing environmental risks.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience delivering environmental requirements on site (desirable).
  • Degree‑level qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant environmental discipline.
  • Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) / MIEMA, or actively working towards chartership.
  • Experience ensuring compliance with environmental legislation and company management systems in a civil engineering environment.
  • Strong understanding of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and their implementation.
  • Demonstrable experience in a similar environmental management role.

About the Rail Business Unit

Millions of people rely on Britain’s rail network to take them safely and efficiently across the country every day. Morgan Sindall helps this happen by providing renewed and enhanced rail infrastructure with the minimum of passenger disruption.

Our customers receive a multi-disciplined service covering electrification, power supply, tunnelling and a full range of civil engineering and building capabilities including structures, lineside infrastructure, and station enhancements. This is complemented by track and signalling works from our supply chain partners to provide a complete rail offering.

Our expertise is focused not only on effective delivery of projects within a railway environment, but also on minimising disruption for railway users through the adoption of innovative working practices and techniques. These include ‘live launch’ bridge construction, in which we can install bridges while allowing railways beneath to remain operational.

From landmark station refurbishment projects and platform extensions to tunnelling works and bridge launches, we have a record of delivering rail projects that are helping to provide a rail network fit for the 21st century.
