Senior Engineering Manager (Temporary Works)

We are seeking an experienced Senior Engineering Manager to lead Temporary Works across our Energy portfolio of National Grid projects in England and Wales.
You will function as the temporary works specialist for the programme, overseeing the day‑to‑day coordination of internal and external engineering teams, ensuring all deliverables are completed on time, within budget and to the highest standards.
In this pivotal role, you will align engineering output with project requirements, drive quality, and efficiency across all phases, and play a key role in the safe and successful delivery of complex schemes.
Role Responsibilities
- Lead and manage engineering resources to meet project requirements.
- Input into all engineering activities at pre-contract and delivery stages.
- Identify temporary works and allocate resources appropriately.
- Function as point of contact for customers and liaise on engineering matters.
- Ensure training, competency, and compliance records for staff are maintained.
- Support mobilisation of new contracts and contribute to health, safety, quality, and environmental planning.
- Manage relationships with consulting engineers and in-house teams.
- Provide design management oversight and implement design agreements.
- Drive innovation, knowledge sharing, and lessons learnt across the business unit.
- Ensure compliance with CDM regulations and support audits and reporting.
- Represent Morgan Sindall at industry forums when required.
- Ensuring temporary works are designed, constructed, maintained, and removed in line with project procedures and standards.
Skills, Experience and Qualifications
- Degree‑level education in a relevant civil or structural engineering discipline (or equivalent).
- Chartered Engineer status (e.g., ICE, IET) or working towards chartership.
- Proven experience overseeing, coordinating, and assuring temporary works on major construction or infrastructure projects.
- Strong capability in managing Temporary Works teams, including TWCs, TWSs and TWDs.
- Competent in preparing, reviewing, and verifying Temporary Works Design Briefs (TWDBs) and associated documentation, inspections, and reviews.
- Strong understanding of Temporary Works Procedures and relevant industry standards, ensuring full compliance across projects.
- Demonstrable experience in design management and assurance within major infrastructure or high‑voltage power transmission projects.
- Senior‑level involvement in large project tender teams, including price and quality adjudication.
- Good understanding of commercial principles, including standard contract terms, conditions, and procurement models.
- Experience managing, monitoring, and auditing assurance regimes and surveillance processes.
- Proven record of managing design processes in both tender and delivery environments.
- Experience of working within joint ventures, alliances, or other collaborative delivery models.
- Excellent communication skills, acting as a key interface between site teams, design consultants, and wider project stakeholders.

About the Energy Business Unit
We have extensive experience in upgrading and replacing energy networks, delivering asset management for major UK energy companies and network operators.
Our transmission and distribution services involve the upgrading and replacement of electricity assets both above and below ground. Within the electricity sector we install and maintain assets, including excavation, laying, and jointing of cables, (fluid filled and XLPe), substations and overhead line, new build, repair, and refurbishment services.
