We are seeking an experienced Environmental Advisor to join our team, working in partnership with National Grid on the Great Grid Upgrade Framework for the PTNO substation extension project at Bryncir. In this role, you will play a key part in supporting the successful delivery of a range of exciting schemes, ensuring environmental compliance across the programme. This opportunity is ideal for someone looking to further develop their skills and step into increased responsibility within a supportive, collaborative environment.

 

Role Responsibilities

  • Provide clear environmental advice and guidance across all levels to minimise risk.
  • Support the development and implementation of environmental elements within the IMS.
  • Produce and update documentation to maintain ISO14001 certification.
  • Contribute to environmental strategy and action plans aligned with business goals.
  • Lead and support inspections, audits, and investigations, driving corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with the Environmental Manager to enhance IMS processes and documentation.
  • Monitor and review environmental performance to support business needs.
  • Provide environmental input into pre‑contract and work‑winning activities.
  • Conduct internal audits and support external audits to ensure legislative and management plan compliance.
  • Promote environmental best practices and share lessons learned across the business.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of environmental legislation and industry standards.
  • Engage with clients to address environmental matters and promote best‑practice solutions.
  • Capture project and business unit environmental data using performance measurement tools.
  • Deliver training to staff, operatives, and subcontractors to ensure legal compliance and adoption of procedures.
  • Report monthly environmental metrics including waste, energy, water, and fuel usage.

 

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Demonstrable experience in a similar environmental role.
  • Environmental qualification such as a degree or diploma (or equivalent).
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively across projects, sites, and operational areas.
  • Strong management and self‑motivation skills, with the ability to motivate colleagues.
  • Excellent planning and time‑management skills, able to manage multiple tasks without compromising standards.
  • Proven ability to ensure technical standards and specifications are consistently met.
  • Ability to contribute effectively to project and operational performance.
  • Sound knowledge of construction practices and wider industry standards.
  • Specialist expertise in a relevant environmental field.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a related subject.
  • Practitioner‑level membership of IEMA (PIEMA), working toward chartered status.
  • Recognised internal auditing qualifications.
  • Strong understanding of corporate strategy, values, and objectives.
  • In‑depth knowledge of ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems and their practical implementation.

About the Energy Business Unit

We have extensive experience in upgrading and replacing energy networks, delivering asset management for major UK energy companies and network operators.

Our transmission and distribution services involve the upgrading and replacement of electricity assets both above and below ground. Within the electricity sector we install and maintain assets, including excavation, laying, and jointing of cables, (fluid filled and XLPe), substations and overhead line, new build, repair, and refurbishment services.
