About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager – Mechanical to lead the delivery of all mechanical infrastructure elements within a major multi‑service distribution network upgrade at HMNB Clyde, one of the UK’s most highly regulated and operationally sensitive environments.

This position oversees complex mechanical installations including pipework networks, pumping systems, HVAC, compressed air, and mechanical plant. You will ensure seamless integration with supporting electrical and civil work packages, delivering high‑quality mechanical services within strict safety, security, and operational constraints.

Success in this role requires exceptional coordination, leadership, and technical understanding, with a strong focus on programme certainty, design assurance, and stakeholder engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Infrastructure Delivery

  • Lead the delivery of major mechanical infrastructure systems, including:
    • Water and fluid distribution networks
    • Pumping stations and associated mechanical plant
    • Cooling/heating distribution systems
    • Pipework systems, valves, and manifolds
    • Compressed air systems
    • HVAC systems
    • Mechanical service tie‑ins to new and existing facilities
  • Manage specialist subcontractors, suppliers, and technical partners.
  • Ensure compliance with mechanical engineering standards, site governance requirements, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Oversee mechanical testing, flushing, pressure testing, commissioning, and assurance documentation.

Interface Management (Electrical & Civil)

  • Coordinate closely with the Electrical Senior Project Manager to align mechanical plant power needs, controls, and system interfaces.
  • Work with the Civils Senior Project Manager to ensure mechanical equipment bases, pipe trenches, service corridors, and foundation requirements are integrated into the wider construction programme.
  • Manage sequencing of installations to avoid clashes and maintain efficient workflow across disciplines.
  • Participate in interface workshops, design coordination sessions, and clash resolution activities.

Brownfield & Operational Site Coordination

  • Manage works in a live operational environment with existing services, legacy infrastructure, and strict safety/security controls.
  • Coordinate shutdowns, isolations, and service tie‑ins to minimise operational disruption.
  • Ensure site risks, constraints, and access issues are proactively managed and communicated.

Planning, Controls & Commercial Coordination

  • Maintain detailed mechanical work programmes aligned to the master schedule.
  • Provide inputs to progress reporting, risk forecasting, and mitigation strategies.
  • Support commercial teams with change management, cost control, procurement, and contract administration.
  • Maintain high‑quality project documentation and assurance records.

Governance, Assurance & Leadership

  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and security regulations.
  • Lead risk, issue, and opportunity management for mechanical scopes.
  • Act as a key point of contact for client, operational, and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to engineers and delivery teams.
  • Drive quality, technical assurance, and right‑first‑time installation approaches.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience delivering mechanical, utility, or industrial infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems including pipework, pumps, HVAC, and compressed air.
  • Experience managing subcontractors within constrained or highly regulated operational sites.
  • Demonstrable ability to coordinate and integrate works with electrical and civil engineering disciplines.
  • Strong understanding of commissioning, testing, and system assurance processes.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experienced in managing NEC contracts.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Chartered or working toward professional accreditation (desirable).
  • SMSTS or equivalent safety qualification.
  • Eligibility for security clearance (required for HMNB Clyde access).
  • Full UK driving licence.
