We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Design Manager to join our team on the Cheshire Connection Node (Lower Frankton) Framework, working with our National Grid client to support the delivery of a programme of high‑profile energy infrastructure schemes. This role represents an excellent opportunity to play a key part in expanding our in‑house Design Management capability across a portfolio of upcoming allocated projects.

 

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the design process from bid stage through to project delivery, ensuring appropriate resources, skills, and governance structures are in place.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive design strategy aligned with project objectives, commercial requirements, and sustainability targets.
  • Oversee the coordination of multidisciplinary design teams, ensuring compliance with RIBA stages, relevant legislation, and industry standards.
  • Ensure design outputs align with the approved programme, cost plan, and technical specifications, maintaining control through regular reviews and progress updates.
  • Manage design reviews and change control processes, effectively interfacing with clients, contractors, consultants, and statutory authorities.
  • Ensure adherence to internal design management procedures while driving continuous improvement, innovation, and best practice throughout the design lifecycle.

 

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Proven experience within the energy sector, with substations experience highly desirable.
  • Experience working to National Grid’s supplier requirements highly desirable.
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC3 and NEC4 forms of contract.
  • Experience managing Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contracts.
  • Demonstrable experience leading and coordinating multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Experience managing and overseeing sub‑contracted design consultancies to ensure quality, compliance, and programme alignment.

About the Energy Business Unit

We have extensive experience in upgrading and replacing energy networks, delivering asset management for major UK energy companies and network operators.

Our transmission and distribution services involve the upgrading and replacement of electricity assets both above and below ground. Within the electricity sector we install and maintain assets, including excavation, laying, and jointing of cables, (fluid filled and XLPe), substations and overhead line, new build, repair, and refurbishment services.
