Financial Controller

Purpose of the Role

The Financial Controller is responsible for ensuring the effective financial management, control and reporting of the business. Working closely with the Finance Director and wider leadership team, the role provides accurate financial information, robust financial governance and commercial insight to support strategic decision-making and business performance.

The role will lead financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and compliance activities, whilst managing and developing a high-performing finance team. As a key business partner, the Financial Controller will work collaboratively across the organisation to drive continuous improvement and maintain strong financial discipline.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Lead the preparation of monthly management accounts, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
  • Oversee statutory reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Manage the month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Ensure balance sheet reconciliations are completed and reviewed regularly.
  • Maintain robust financial controls and governance frameworks.
  • Support the annual external audit process and liaise with auditors as required.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards, tax legislation and Group policies.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process.
  • Coordinate regular forecasting and financial planning activities.
  • Analyse financial performance, identify trends and provide recommendations to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
  • Deliver insightful financial reporting and commentary to support business decision-making.

Business Partnering

  • Partner with operational and commercial leaders to provide financial guidance and challenge.
  • Support project and contract reviews, ensuring financial risks and opportunities are identified and managed.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and business improvement initiatives.
  • Drive a culture of financial accountability across the business.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach and develop the finance team.
  • Foster a high-performance culture focused on continuous improvement.
  • Ensure effective allocation of workload and resources within the department.
  • Support succession planning and talent development within the finance function.

Risk & Compliance

  • Monitor and manage financial risks.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, corporate governance and Group requirements.
  • Support the implementation of process improvements and systems enhancements.
  • Promote best practice in financial management throughout the business.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA).
  • Significant experience in a Financial Controller or senior finance leadership role.
  • Strong technical accounting and financial reporting expertise.
  • Proven experience of budgeting, forecasting and financial planning.
  • Experience managing and developing finance teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management capabilities.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with financial systems.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced commercial environment.

Desirable

  • Experience within construction, fit out, property or project-led sectors.
  • Experience working within a listed company or Group reporting environment.
  • Familiarity with ERP and business intelligence systems.
  • Experience driving process improvement and finance transformation initiatives.
